Atelier No input avec The Great No Input Orchestra

Atelier "no input" - © Philippe Mion

No input is the experimental practice of using the mixing console as a musical instrument... or at least as a sound generator.

By plugging inputs into outputs, you create resonances in the electronic circuit, feedback that can take on a multitude of sonic forms depending on the settings.

This unconventional use of the mixing console is particularly common in electro-acoustic and experimental music. Some artists, such as Toshimaru Nakamura, use this technique as their main creative medium.

The aim of the workshop is to introduce you to this often little-known musical practice and to help you understand how it works so that you can use it in a creative context.
The no-input philosophy is closely linked to the concept of empowerment, following a process of understanding and appropriating instruments. It's an invitation to divert the tools from their original uses to reveal their full sonic potential.

About the artists :

Philippe Mion is a composer, sound designer and sound engineer based in Lyon and Besançon. Following an eclectic university career exploring sound in all its forms, he now works for a range of cultural organisations, from museums to theatres and contemporary music venues.

Simon Saint-Hillier is an artisanal musician who floats on the border between popular and experimental music. A slow drift from the psychedelic, progressive or exploratory branches of rock, jazz and hip-hop, where sound is more a material, a landscape. Returning to Besançon after several years in Montreal and Lyon, he continues his quiet, empirical expedition into audio territory.
