Would you like to stay as close to the water as possible? Whether it be camping, a lockkeeper’s house, a mill, or lodgings that are out of the ordinary: enjoy the charm of holidays right by the water!

Go camping on the banks of the river

Camping sites located along the riverbanks boast green surroundings that are ideal for a family holiday. Tents on stilts, chalets that resemble wood cabins, bungalows, or vintage caravans: you will have plenty to choose from when it comes to outdoor accommodation.

If you’re on a cycling tour along the towpath, the camping sites labelled “Accueil Vélo” offer the perfect accommodation to discover the landscapes of the Rivers of Western France at your own pace. Some tent villages offer activities on the nearby water in collaboration with leisure bases.

Sleep at a lockkeeper's house

Some of the lockkeepers’ houses that line the rivers have been converted into tourist accommodation that can be rented for a week, a weekend, or a single night. They are ideal for bicycle touring and hiking, and offer quirky and usual accommodation right by the water.

Along the river Mayenne, the Refuges du Halage have three holiday rentals in lockkeepers’ houses between Sacé and Montflours. In the village of Origné, the lockkeeper’s house at Benâtre lock is situated on the cycling route Vélo Francette and offers room and board. At the heart of Anjou, Mara Rivière is a spacious stopover with breath-taking views of the Chenillé-Champteussé dam.

How about spending a night at a bed and breakfast right on the water? The Moulin de Neuville mill has three comfortable rooms right above the river Mayenne. Having your breakfast on the terrace will feel as though you were on a boat!

Spending the night in extraordinary lodgings

All along the Rivers of Western France you will find nestled different extraordinary kinds of accommodation that are somewhere between a hut and a tiny house!

If you’ve always dreamed of spending the night in a traditional caravan, head to the Domaine du Moulin in Chenillé-Changé. A cosy night by the river is guaranteed with its large bed in an alcove and children’s furniture.

In the Sarthe valley, the river stop at Cap Noyen holds in store accommodation in barrels or pods. Situated on the riverside, these small ecological lodgings are the kind of camping that brings you closest to nature.

On the Mayenne, cycle tourists can spend the night in one of the “cabanes à l’écluse” (“huts by the lock”) located at the lock of Benâtre in Origné. Enjoy your stopover on the towpath on the “Vélo Francette” route!
