Between the 15th and 16th centuries, kings and princes became preoccupied with their "image", both in the pictorial sense and in the broader sense of political representation.
Thanks to the development of a new visual language, designed to be recognised by all, and its widespread dissemination in Europe, portraits no longer simply represented power: they shaped its authority, built its legitimacy and justified it".
