Inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story, this marvellous tale follows the story of young Clara, who receives a nutcracker in the shape of a little man as a present. On Christmas Eve, the toy comes to life and takes her on a magical adventure: a battle against an army of mischievous mice, a transformation into a prince charming, and then an enchanting journey through a fairy-tale kingdom where flowers and snowflakes come to life to dance.

The two-act ballet was first performed in December 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. It remains one of the most frequently performed ballets in the world, thanks to its spellbinding music and spectacular choreography.
