Faire la fête
A lecture exploring artistic and sociological representations of collective jubilation through the centuries.
Parades, festivals, banquets, balls and even carnivals: celebration – a manifestation of life in all its forms, an expression of bodies and beings in all their diversity – is abundantly represented in art. This lecture explores the many themes that serve as a pretext for celebrations, their ephemeral or permanent settings, their array of spectacular attractions and their dedicated architectural designs. It also offers an opportunity to explore the festival as a social phenomenon in which the relationships between the centre and the margins become blurred and reversed, challenging our normative frameworks and opening up new perspectives, both individual and collective.
