European Heritage Days in Cornillé-les-Caves: discover La Charpenterie and its tower

Fancy getting a bird’s-eye view to gain a better understanding of a village?

In Cornillé-les-Caves, certain places not only tell their own stories but also offer a unique vantage point over the landscape. As you step through the doors of La Charpenterie, an elegant early 19th-century neoclassical mansion, you enter a world where every stone, every outbuilding and every archive document bears witness to life in days gone by. Then comes the climb up the tower. From a height of 29 metres, the view takes in the hillsides, the crops and the terrain that shape this corner of Anjou Loir & Sarthe, revealing the full richness of a region characterised by tuffeau stone.

The guided tour continues in a small museum where artefacts, archives and a film produced to mark the bicentenary of the house bring the history of the place to life with simplicity and passion. It’s a wonderful opportunity to chat with those working to preserve this heritage, before continuing your exploration through the narrow streets of Cornillé-les-Caves and setting off to discover other treasures that are exceptionally open to the public for European Heritage Days.

Practical information: Free guided tours of La Charpenterie and its tower, on Saturday from 11.00 to 18.00 and on Sunday from 10.30 to 12.00 and then from 14.00 to 17.30.
