Journées Européennes du Patrimoine - Four à chanvre

Four à chanvre - Mairie Tiercé

The hemp oven is a structure that was used to dry hemp. This plant with palmate leaves was grown for its stalks, which provided an excellent textile fibre, and for its seeds, or hemp seeds. It was also used to make ropes.

This type of building can be found in regions where hemp was grown in the 19th century, notably in Sarthe and a small part of Orne, Mayenne and Indre-et-Loire.
