Built in the 15th century on the foundations of the fortress under Foulques Nerra, the château was constructed by Jean Bourré, a minister of Louis XI. It is the third residence built by this figure, following the Château de VAUX (in Miré) and the Château du Plessis-Bourré (in Ecuillé). This elegant country house suffered the ravages of the Revolution and was remodelled at the turn of the 18th century, in the spirit of the great architectural achievements of the late 18th century, combining simplicity and grandeur. The terraces and gardens were redesigned in 1911 by the famous landscape architect René-Edouard.

The site offers truly remarkable views; to the south, in fine weather, one can even see as far as the towers of Saumur Castle.
