Since 1971, the theatre troupe – made up of amateur and volunteer actors – has performed, every January and February, the dramatic true story of the local hero Rouget the Poacher, who, on the run after killing a gendarme in 1854, was arrested because of a woman he loved and ended his days in the Cayenne penal colony. A play recounting in full the story of Louis Rouget, known as ‘Rouget the Poacher’, the elusive outlaw who outwitted gendarmes and soldiers alike.

Daumeray, his village, proud of its long theatrical tradition, ensures that the true face of its hero, Rouget the Poacher, lives on in the collective memory. A symbol, at the dawn of the Second Empire, of the revolt of the humble world of peasants and day labourers against ‘the wealthy’, Rouget has been brought back to life since 1971 in a production which, for those who have seen it, exudes a genuine sense of social communion.

A grand historical drama in three acts and five scenes – just enough to revive the collective memory: to recall the era of poaching, to explain the disconnect between the law and reality, and between urban and rural life…

Performed on stage on Saturdays and Sundays at 2.30 pm from 16 January to 13 February 2027.

Suitable for ages 10 and over.
