Neil McCauley is an experienced robber. He is careful not to make any mistakes during his robberies. His accomplices do not have the same scruples or "professional conscience". During a well-planned operation, one of them shoots two security guards. This double murder is of great interest to Lieutenant Hanna, who is quick to identify McCauley as the mastermind of the gang. The two men get to know each other through files and surveillance. So much so that they ended up meeting. Each vows to defeat the other. A duel begins, on the edge of legality. Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, two monsters of the cinema, perform an anthology act.
