Torn between Good and Evil, Pastor Harry Powell travels across Virginia murdering widows and "temptresses". Arrested for stealing a car, he is sentenced to 30 days in prison. In prison, he meets Ben Harper, a death row inmate who has just carried out a hold-up. Harper, who talks in his sleep, reveals that he has hidden a $10,000 hoard in a place known only to his two young children. On his release from prison, Powell visits the Harper farm and becomes close to the widow, whom he eventually marries. Now the head of the family, he does everything he can to extort the secret from the children...
