Every week during the 18th century, thousands of rural Maine farmers travelled to the nearby town to look at, sell or buy grain, yarn, wool and, above all, livestock. These trading encounters gave rise to a culture of exchange, based on fine expertise and a sometimes rough-and-tumble face-off combining honesty and cunning.
