It was at the Maison Forte du Verger, owned by Pierre de Rohan Guéméné, Marshal of France known as ‘the Marshal of Gié’, that the Treaty of Le Verger was negotiated; this treaty brought an end to the war between Brittany and France in 1488 and paved the way for the marriage in 1491 of Anne of Brittany to King Charles VIII of France. The Marshal of Gié subsequently had one of the finest castles of the late 15th century built on this site between 1492 and 1506.
Between 1776 and 1783, the château was dismantled by Cardinal de Rohan so that the materials could be sold off. Imposing remains of the vast château are still visible today: machicolated towers, ditches, moats, and the boundary walls of the park and stables.
