Les Samedis de l'histoire : Reconstruire et construire à Laval, habitat et logement de 1945 à 1970

Isabelle Las, archivist at the Archives de la Mayenne, will present the period of reconstruction and construction of collective and individual housing in Laval at the end of the Second World War to make up for the shortage of housing.

Like all French cities, Laval faced a major housing crisis after the Second World War. This crisis, which had been present well before 1945, was exacerbated by the consequences of the conflict (influx of refugees, destruction in 1944) as well as demographic growth and the rural exodus. The first emergency measures and the reconstruction phase were followed by a period of collective and individual housing construction designed to make up for the shortage of housing. The face of the city changed, new neighbourhoods sprang up, and large housing estates and housing estates were built in a city whose population continued to grow.
