Les travailleurs de la mer - Cie Livsnerven

Les Travailleurs de la mer - © Filip Flatau

The Livsnerven Theatre Company has adapted Victor Hugo’s novel into an intense and spectacular one-man show, set against a backdrop of storms, passion and excess.

Gilliatt, a fisherman who is as rough-and-ready as he is sensitive, is in love with Déruchette, the niece of the owner of a ship that has run aground off the coast of Guernsey. In order to win her hand, he braves the elements at the risk of his own life and attempts to save the ship. In a truly masterful performance, Elya Birman brings this dazzling tale to life and embodies this man pushed beyond his limits. Clémentine Niewdanski’s ingenious direction captures the immensity of the sea, whilst the lighting and soundtrack heighten the dangers the hero faces. This unmissable production plunges us into the heart of human nature and the mysteries of the world.
