Scènes de la vie conjugale - Le Cargo

Booking

Scenes from married life, by Ingmar Berman, directed by Christophe Perton, Friday 13 March 2026 at 8.30pm at Le Cargo in Segré.

In 1973 Ingmar Bergman created "Scenes from Married Life" for television, a six-part story that dissects with a scalpel the body and soul of a model middle-class couple based on the bourgeois conventions of love.

Such was its impact that when it was broadcast, the whole country locked itself in front of the small screen to follow the story of Marianne and Johan, so much so that at the appointed hour, the city streets were deserted, everyone projecting themselves into the maelstrom describing the implosion of this seemingly ideal couple.

What Bergman brings to the screen is the truth of what is happening between a man and a woman. He gives the husband and wife the words to say what they feel, to talk about feelings and sex. Crudely, magnificently, horribly. It's all out in the open, just like at home, with heartbreak and devastating humour. Over and over again, this story, based on the power of its dialogue, holds up a mirror to us. We recognise our marital splendours and miseries, illuminated by a pitiless lucidity and immense humanity.
