Variations - Ali Kazma

Music by Selen Gülün and Kudsi Erguner

In Bursa, Turkey, at the world's largest factory producing entirely recycled polyester filament for the textile industry, Ali Kazma filmed yarn production for three days using an ultra-sensitive 100mm lens to capture the making of an extremely fine fabric as it comes off the machines after a long industrial transformation process.

The result is a vast abstract audiovisual composition, broadcast on three screens and three loudspeakers, reminiscent of Johann Sebastian Bach's art of the fugue.

The installation created especially for Le Mans sonore presents two distinct audiovisual proposals. Starting with 120 visual segments, and as many different musical fragments imagined by composer Selen Gülün for the cello, performed by Zeynep Ayse Hatipoglu, and by composer Kudsi Eruguner for the tambur, a traditional Turkish instrument recorded at Ircam by Burak Savas. It is from these materials that Ali Kazma has composed two modular video versions that subvert and question the very idea of a film soundtrack.
